I pause at this ancient gateway along the trail. This would have originally had a lintel (top stone or arch), likely harvested at some point in the past for a newer building, and the notches on either side would have held hinges for a door or gate.


We follow the trail towards the archeological site at the top of the terraces, and hear a lone flute player in the distance. The Inca didn't have a written language, but their spoken language of Quechua is still used today, and signs like this are spelled out phonetically. Our guide speaks briefly in Quechua to the flute player as we pass by.
